A gentleman's club in Mayfair next door to the Duke of Snodgrove's town house that catered to intellectuals, philosophers, and scientists. By the end of Soulless, it was discovered that the members of the Hypocras Club were kidnapping and experimenting on vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures.
The club had several goals:
- Attentiveness—To identify and understand the supernatural threat, assess vulnerabilities, determine potential impacts and disseminate information to our members and security partners.
- Preclusion—To detect, deter and mitigate the supernatural threat to the commonwealth.
- Precaution—To safeguard natural people and their freedoms, and maintain critical infrastructure and intellectual advancement of the scientific community.
- “The sign above the door to the Hypocras Club read PROTEGO RES PUBLICA, engraved into white Italian marble. Miss Alexia Tarabotti, gagged, trussed, bound, and carried by two men—one holding her shoulders, the other her feet—read the words upside down. She had a screaming headache, and it took her a moment to translate the phrase through the nauseating aftereffects of chloroform exposure. Finally she deduced its meaning: to protect the commonwealth." (Soulless, Chapter Ten)
