The Curious Case of the Werewolf That Wasn't, the Mummy That Was, and the Cat in the Jar, also known as The Curious Case: An Alessandro Tarabotti Story, is the sixth published book in the Parasol Protectorate Series, the first short story in the series, and the first story chronologically.

"A short tale of mummies, werewolves, and well preserved felines set in the world of the Parasol Protectorate.

Alessandro Tarabotti and his valet, Floote, are on a mission in Egypt when they encounter visiting tourists and things go all pie shaped. What is his real mission and will his Aunt Archangelica approve of his treatment of her cat?

In this short story, New York Times Bestselling Author Gail Carriger uses her comedic voice to delve into the history of one of her most beloved characters. If you have ever wondered about Alexia's father, this will give you a glimpse into his adventures and character. This story was first published in The Book of the Dead, a Jurassic London anthology. 8,300 words."

Contents[]

The story starts off in Luxor, Egypt in the middle of a bazaar where Alessandro and his valet Floote are trying to hunt down

Quotes[]

  • "Sandy Dandy the Italian? By Jove, it is you! Fancy, fancy, fancy!"

Trivia[]

  • Alessandro Tarabotti has an Antikythera mechanism, which Gail added in because of her love of underwater archaeology and Ancient Greece. The mention of this device is also one of Gail's cookies (her term for Easter Eggs), for the device is based on the Egyptian calendar (and Alessandro is in Egypt while using it and must have extensive knowledge of that calendar in order to do so) and it predicts the lunar phase and position (necessary when one is fighting werewolves). There is a Stuff You Should Know podcast on the Antikythera mechanism. Alessandro's version may, or may not, be updated to reflect early Victorian knowledge of planets, which would have expanded the device but not changed its effectiveness with regards to the moon.
